Key Man – Jordi Gomez
With Victor Moses expected to leave before the transfer window closes at the end of August, the Spanish playmaker is likely to be the Latics’ most creative influence in the midfield. Scored a number of important goals last season and boasts good vision, Jordi Gomez will have a huge role to play in helping Wigan survive the drop.
19-Aug – Chelsea (H)
25-Aug – Southampton (A)
01-Sep – Stoke (H)
15-Sep – Man Utd (A)
23-Sep – Fulham (H)
29-Sep – Sunderland (A)
Probable Formation (4-5-1): Al Habsi; Boyce, Ramis, Caldwell, Figueroa; Moses, Gomez, Watson, McCarthy, Maloney; Kone.
Verdict: Roberto Martinez again left it late to produce the ‘Great Escape’, and it’s very difficult to say this season will be any different. Signing Ivan Ramis and Arouna Kone from La Liga side Mallorca and Levante, respectively, are very good ones, but if they fail to keep Victor Moses from joining Chelsea, they won’t be any better off. The Latics seem to survive every year, but I think this season will be a very tough one for the club and could be their last in the top flight.
