Lionel Messi broke Gerd Muller’s 40-year-old record for the most goals in a calender year with a brace in Barcelona’s 2-1 win at Real Betis.
The Argentine took just 16 minutes to equal the German legend’s mark of 85 goals in 1972 when he slotted home a ball from Adriano. And the 25-year-old surpassed the former Bayern Munich player nine minutes later with a sweeping shot from Andres Iniesta’s deft backheel.
